NYAA Skills Entries 4 (Drills)

Thursday, November 25, 2010

Date: 8th October 2010
Duration: 4 hours

The month of October was full of revisions, to prepare us for a test on the 3rd week of the month. Today, we did a mass revision of all the rifle drills we have done so far, refining them. These drills included ‘rusok senjata’, ‘hormat senjata’, ‘turun senjata’, ‘baring senjata’, ‘angkat senjata’, and many more. We split ourselves up into two rows, by which we stood facing each other as we executed drills, so as to point out each other’s mistakes. We ended the training confident in our execution of all the rifle drills we have learnt so far.

Date: 15th October 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we took turns to command the squad the drills we revised last week. Every 10 minutes, the person taking the squad would change, and at each person’s turn, he would have to give the squad commands such as ‘hormat senjata’, ‘julang senjata’ and ‘angkat senjata’. We shouted the commands out loudly and clearly, and we ended giving each other feedback, so that we could improve our drill standards before the test next week.

Date: 22nd October 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today was our 2nd Class Drill Badge Test. An Honorary Officer came down to our school to conduct the test. We stood proudly in the parade square, as one by one; we stepped forward, commanded the squad, executed the tested drills, and stepped back into the squad. It is safe to say that all the hard work and revisions paid off, as all of us in the Squad Arcainez managed to pass the test!

Date: 29th October 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we learned how to turn on the march and wheeling on the march, both with our rifles. Just like when we first marched with our rifles, it was difficult adapting to it with the rifles we were carrying. At first, we were unco-ordinated and were very awkward, but soon we got the hang of it and spent the next hour refining and perfecting our movements as a squad. By using clear, efficient timings we managed to perfect our movements and turnings.
For the next hour we revised all our static rifle drills like “hormat” and “rusok”. As we had spent a few weeks practicing we were very co-ordinated and executed the drills well. By taking turns to command the squad we were able to keep the drill commands fresh in our minds.
At the end of the training we felt we had accomplished much as together we had refined our previous drills and learnt new ones.

Date: 6th November 2010
Duration: 4hours

Today, we revised al the rifle drills we had learned so far. We spent an hour and half refining the drills such as the more difficult ones like “hormat” and “julang”. Each of us took it in turn to command the squad so as to help each other memorise the drill commands and to execute the drill commands perfectly. Also, we practiced among ourselves and pointed out our individuals’ mistakes so as to help one another perfect the drills.
We spent the other hour and half refining our marching, turning, wheeling and hentak. We took it in turns to shout out the timings so that everyone would know the precise timings and also looked out for individual mistakes. We perfected our movements for the rest of the time, pointing our each other’s mistakes so that we could learn from them.
AT the end of the training, we reflected upon our overall performance as a squad and felt that we had improved a lot in our rifle drills and marching.

Date: 12th November 2010
Duration: 4hours

Today, we revised all the drills we have done for the past weeks. For 2 hours we took in turns to take the squad and command the rifle drills, pointing out one another’s mistakes to perfection. Slowly, we perfected our own individual performance according to the timings given and by the end of the 2 hours we had successfully performed perfect rifle drills as a squad without timings. We felt we had made a big accomplishment in our performance.
For the next 2 hours, we worked on our marching. Each of us took in turn to command the squad in the turning or wheeling and also changed the timers regularly to ensure everyone could shout out co-ordinated timings. We worked on our marching for the rest of the time, perfecting our coordinated movements as a squad so that by the end of the duration we could march and execute the turnings, hentak and wheeling without timing.
All in all, we felt we had accomplished and achieved a lot by this training. Together we had perfected our drills and refined our marching.

Date: 19th November 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we did the same thing as last week, taking turns to command the squad and correcting our squad mates’ mistakes. We also practiced more marching. After this whole NYAA drills, we had a few takeaways. Doing drills together as a squad made us more bonded and at the same time it was an enjoyable process. We managed to perfect our rifle drills and also had fun. We learnt that teamwork is very important in drills. We had to co-ordinate with each other to have a uniform bang, as even 1 person who is not in sync will make the drills imperfect. We also had to look out for one another’s mistake and correct them in order to help each other improve and ultimately, increase the standard of our squad.

Date: 8th October 2010
Duration: 2.5 hours

Today, we started off by practicing our passes, which served as a warm up. Most of us were inaccurate in passing and would often end up passing to the wrong person. However, after several tries, we improved in our passing. From there, we moved on to play a soccer match in the field. The game had ended with a score of 2-1. Then, the game was interrupted by heavy downpour. Everyone proceeded to the indoor sports hall, where we continued the game. Throughout the game, there were few injuries but the rest of the game continued smoothly. The match finally ended with a score of 5-3.

Date: 15th October 2010
Duration: 2.5 hours

Today, we started with our practice of dribbling in the field. Everyone was given a chance to practice their dribbling skills. Then, we went on to play 2 soccer matches. Everyone was actively involved in the game. Both teams focused more on passing rather than shooting as we wanted to develop teamwork amongst the teammates, as well as to further improve in our passing accuracy. The game came to a halt with a final score of 5-3. After the first game, the teams were reselected. This time, the match was more exhausting as it was longer and required more running. Fortunately, there were no injuries this week. The game ended with a final score of 5-4.

Date: 22nd October 2010
Duration: 2.5 hours

Today, we went straight into the soccer match. By now, most of us had improved in our playing and are able to dribble the ball without much trouble. As usual, we played 2 soccer games. Most of us had performed quite well in terms of our passing and dribbling. Our overall passing accuracy had been much better as compared to our first soccer session, and our teamwork had significantly improved. That was shown through our communication with teammates on the pitch. The 2 soccer matches ended with scores of 5-3 and 7-2 respectively.

Date: 29th October 2010
Duration: 2.5 hours

Today, we practiced our crossing skills as we were rather weak in this segment. At the beginning, most of us could not cross properly and our passes were often off target. Despite all this, we were more motivated to master the way to deliver a proper cross. After several tries, we finally grasped the way to deliver a proper cross. Then, we decided to further improve on our crossing in the match itself. The first game ended with a score of 4-4. We then proceeded on to our second game, which ended with a score of 3-1. By the end of this soccer session, we had improved in our crossing.

Date: 6th November 2010
Duration: 2.5 hours

Today, we started with a practice on penalty kicks. Everyone took turns to become goal keepers and the penalty taker. The aim of being a penalty taker was to to improve on our accuracy, whereas being a goalkeeper would train us to be confident in ourselves. Soon, most of us were quite good in our penalty kicks and we proceeded to our usual routine of soccer matches. The first game ended with a score of 3-3, while the second game ended with 4-2.

Date: 12th November 2010
Duration: 2.5 hours

Today, we began with a practice of free kicks. Everyone took turns to take a free kick and then switched role to become goalkeeper. Taking a free kick is a difficult feat which requires much practice. Despite all the practices, not everyone was able to take a free kick successfully. However, as a whole, we managed to finish our practice of free kicks. Thereafter, we proceeded on to the soccer matches. By now, we had practiced most of the stuff required in soccer. Throughout the 2 soccer matches, everyone was actively involved and were quite confident in their own playing. The soccer matches ended with the scores of 5-4 and 5-3 respectively.

Date: 19th November 2010
Duration: 2.5 hours

Today, we had our second last NYAA soccer session. We wasted no time in splitting ourselves into 2 teams. Before long, we were already playing. Over the past few weeks of soccer, we have improved our skills. We were more agile, more accurate and more bonded after all these soccer sessions. Many goals were scored in a short period of time. However the losing team did not feel discouraged and instead encouraged each other to try harder. In the end, their effort paid off as they scored many goals in the second half and emerged victorious. Their never-say-die spirit is very admirable and we should all learn from them.

Date: 26th November 2010
Duration: 2.5 hours

We had our last session of soccer today. We were split into groups again within our squad, and had a ball of a time. After this whole NYAA soccer session, we had a few takeaways.Playing a game we liked together as a squad, we managed to bond more, and enjoy the process as well. Instead of bonding over strenuous activities like drills, we got to sweat it out in the field and bond together, over a ball. Also, we learnt that teamwork was very important in everything we do, as a squad. Despite different playing styles on the field, we managed to get the ball into the goals, scoring for our teams. This is alike to working together as a squad to plan trainings and such. We all have different working styles, and have to learn to compromise and complement each other such that we will achieve our goals in the end.

VS SPORTS DAY 2010 14-7-2010

All the sec 3 cadets were clad in their NPCC uniform doing crowd control duty. It was yet again another Victoria School Annual Sports day. However, this time, it was held at the Institute Of Technical Education, or otherwise also known as ITE. We were unfamiliar with the ITE area but we were determined to do our service well.

The NPCC unit was then deployed in groups of two at specified areas. Nevertheless, as soon as the sports day was about to commence, a slight drizzle took off. However, despite this all of us stood our ground and continued to direct people from outside ITE to inside ITE where the teachers were. Soon, hordes of previous and current batches of Victorian thronged the already crowded place. However, this did not taunt us as we started to do our jobs proper.

Fortunately for us, the drizzle stopped after awhile, and our school's sports day could go on smoothly. During the sports day, we helped controlling the crowd, carrying the logistics such as the cones to their respective spaces. 4.5 hours went by quickly. Our duties started again just as it ended, instead we were immediately redeployed to our respective stations yet again to guide our fellow school-mates out of ITE and safely to the exits.

During the debrieifing, we were complimented by our Teacher in charge and siad that there was always room for improvement, and that we were luck that it did not rain. Although we cannot control the weather, we must act accordingly. Our squad was proud that we were able to guide the people well enough and direct them to their proper seats and do our allocated tasks well.

Road Safety Park 4-8-2010

All Secondary 3 NPCC cadets were invited by the Traffic Police to help out in the annual Shell Traffic Games Day organised by Traffic Police to promote the importance of road safety to primary school students and educate the students on road safety measures.

We were driven by bus to Road Safety Park in East Coast Beach, where the police officers in charge of the event put us into different groups and briefed each group on their roles. Some cadets were assigned to carry out road marshal duty, while others were instructed to help with the sorting out of the goodie bags, which were to be given to the primary school students upon their arrival.

The police officers in charge of each group then deployed the groups to their respective stations. I was assigned to help out with sorting out the goodie bags, which came in a few colours. As the goodie bags were stored in one of the rooms, my group members and I entered the room and carried the bags out to the pavilion, a few at a time. This took quite some time as there were many bags and the relatively large size of each bag made it rather difficult to carry many bags at a time. Nevertheless, we soon completed this task.

After that, we proceeded to sort out the bags according to their colour. The white bags would be placed together, the yellow bags were placed together and the same went for the light green bags.

Soon, the primary school students arrived and we gave every student a bag before asking them to proceed on with the activity schedule. It was fun playing with the three different colours of the bags as some students preferred the yellow coloured bag, whereas others demanded for a white coloured one. White was the most popular colour and we had to give out the white coloured bags slowly so as to ensure that students from other schools that arrived later would still have a chance to obtain them.

When all the students had cleared the pavilion, we took a rest as the other groups performed road marshalling at different spots around the park. From the pavilion, I could see some of my fellow cadets acting as ‘green men’ and others directing the students as they were playing the games.

Lastly, all the groups helped to clean up the area after the students had left. We were then treated to some food by the police officers as a reward for our hard work. By then, everyone was tired but we were happy to have been able to help the traffic police in making the 2010 Shell Traffic Games Day a success.

VS Cross Country Run 9-9-2010

That day was our Victoria School cross-country event as well as a mass run. All Victorians travelled to East Coast Park for the event. In order to ensure order and safety of the students, Victoria School National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) unit decided to deploy about 20-30 cadets to help in ensuring the order and safety of the students. We were deployed at different sections of the road towards East Coast Park as well as near the running path itself and were to ensure that the students did not run about or play on the way there, which may result in injuries. If the students felt any discomfort or pain, we were to escort the students to either the Red Cross students for help or sent back to the school to rest.

NYAA Skills Entries 2 (Drills)

Date: 6th August 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we started learning this new set of drills, which is rifle drills. For rifle drills, we use dummy 5.56mm M-16 rifles to learn, practice and master these drills.
First of all, we have to learn the basic rifle drills starting with ‘sedi-a’ and ‘senang di-ri’ with the rifle. It was simple, so we mastered within a short time.
Then, it was ‘rusok senja-ta’ from ‘sedi-a’. This particular drill was difficult to grasp, as we had to flick the rifle up from the ground and hold it with both hands at the same time. The main problem was that most of us could not grab with both hands at the same time, but instead ‘transferred’, which means grabbing the rifle with one hand at a time.
This drill took some time to learn and even more to practice, especially with that ‘transferring’ problem. At the end of this drill session, most of us finally managed to execute this drill properly.

Date: 13th August 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we revised the rifle drills we have learnt for the previous training and found out that a lot of us seemed to have lost the momentum of the drills. So, we took quite some time to practice them as ‘Practice makes Perfect’. We improved significantly in terms of coordination and swiftness in executing the drill, after this revision and drill practice.
Then, we learnt another new rifle drill, ’hormat senja-ta’, which is to salute. This particular drill had many steps and parts to it, so it takes time for all of us to remember at heart and learn this drill. We practised by parts first, so as to have a good grasp of the different steps. Finally, we managed to perform this drill fully, but there is definitely much more space for improvement.
We practised this drill for quite some time, before finally having mastered this complex drill.

Date: 20th August 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we revised the rifle drills we have learnt so far. Although most of us were able to execute the drill, there was still room for improvement. We practised and improved significantly in terms of coordination and precision in executing the drill.
We learnt another rifle drill, which is the ‘turun senja-ta’ from ‘hormat senja-ta’. It is to bring the rifle from salute down to the ground. This, just like the ‘hormat senja-ta’, is quite complex, as it has a lot of steps. We first learnt by parts and finally as a whole. Nobody can ever master a drill just by executing once, so we continued practising this drill.
Also, we learnt ‘turun senja-ta’ from ‘rusok senja-ta’. It is relatively simpler to learn and everyone was able to execute it in a matter of time. Finally, after practising all the rifle drills learnt so far, we were able to execute them very well.

Date: 27th August 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, after revising on rifle drills learnt so far, we practised marching with the rifle. We were to take note of minor details such as to avoid dragging our feet, to land on our heels and coordinating our arm swings.
Although we were able to march properly free-hand, without the rifle, but with the rifle, the marching experience was different. It took quite some time for us to adapt and we finally managed to march with the rifle well enough, though not a hundred percent perfect, at the end of the day.

Date: 3th September 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we revised the rifle drills that we have learnt, as usual, and practised marching with the rifle. After we were perfect, we learnt two new related rifle drills, ‘baring senja-ta’ and ‘angkat senja-ta’.
The drill ‘baring senja-ta’ is to place the rifle down to the ground from ‘sedi-a’ position. It takes some time to learn and practise till perfect, as we tend to slam the rifle down on the ground, though supposed to place it down gently and silently. There were also some difficulties in trying to place the rifle straight in position. We practised for some time and managed to execute this drill with coordination and accuracy.
Next is ‘angkat senja-ta’. It is to pick up the rifle from the ground after ‘baring senja-ta’. This was not as difficult as ‘baring senja-ta’, because there was only a problem of not being able to reach the rifle on the ground. We took a couple of minutes to learn, and we practised many times before being perfect in this drill.

Date: 10th September 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we practised the drills we have learnt, especially concentrating those newer ones, as the older ones are always used and had always being practised, such that we had no problems with them.
We were taught a new rifle drill this training, ‘julang senja-ta’. It is to bring the rifle from ‘rusok senja-ta’ to high port. We have to bring the rifle up in front of the chest and hold it with the magazine pointing forwards. This was simple to learn, but there were mistakes to be corrected, such as not pointing the magazine forward. Most of us mastered this drill at the end of this drills session.

Date: 17th September 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we went straight into learning two new rifle drills. First was ‘aleh senja-ta’, for changing the rifle from ‘rusok senja-ta’ position on the left to the right. It is also similar for the reverse action back to ‘rusok senja-ta’ position. After learning and practising, this easy-to-grasp drill was within our hands.
Second was ‘bimbit senja-ta’, for bringing the rifle down from ‘rusok senja-ta’ to hold the carrying handle. This drill was simple to catch, but the only problem was that some of us did not hold the rifle straight pointing forwards. This mistake took some time of practise to correct till we were perfect in this particular drill.
These two drills, though simple, took some time to practise, before we proceeded to revising all the other rifle drills until the end of training.

Date: 24th September 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we firstly did all the other non-rifle drills that we have learnt. Then, we combined all the rifle drills we have learnt and practised it to mastery, and did with marching drills, such as marching at ‘julang senja-ta’ position.
This session was to practise and master all the drills we have learnt so far, so that our squad can execute drills proficiently with coordination, accuracy and swiftness by the end of training.

NYAA Skills Entries 1 (Drills)

Date: 4th June 2010
Duration: 4 hours

To prepare us for the school 134th speech day parade, Squad Arcainez was taught flag drills. Cadet Inspectors (CIs) and Honorary Officer (HO) were the in-charge of the trainings. On 23th june 2010, we learnt static drill, including Sedia (attention) and selang diri (at ease). Beside learning how to execute these dills precisely, we learn the correct way of handling our flags, such as the griping of flag poles before retiring for the day.

Date: 11th June 2010
Duration: 4 hours

On 1st July 2010, we continued with our flag drill trainings. As warming up activity, we started off with the static drills we learnt on 4th June 2010. However, some of us had forgotten the correct way of executing the drills and for the benefit of cadets who had missed training on 4th June 2010, the instructors decided to re-teach the drills.

Date: 18th June 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Similar to 11th June 2010, we started off with static drills. Thankfully, we managed to execute them pretty well. To further improve our drills, we spent 3 hours perfecting them and during the last 1 hour, the contingent was introduced to rusok senja ta (shoulder arms). We learnt the uses of it and managed to practise it for a while.

Date: 25th June 2010
Duration: 4 hours

On 25th June, we started off with rusok senja ta. However, some cadets had difficulties in executing it. Thankfully, instructors were there to guide the squad. It was not long before the entire contingent managed to do it properly. Though all can execute it, there were still rooms for improvement and coordination between squad mates are needed, therefore, we dedicated the rest of the day practicing and by the end of the day, most of them were able to execute the drills precisely.

Date: 2nd July 2010
Duration: 4 hours

On 2nd July, we were introduced to turun senja ta (order arms). Similar to rusok, we first learnt the theoretical aspect of it before moving on to the practical session. As turun senja ta has many parts and timing, the contingent was at a loss in the first place. It was only until the end of the day before the squad managed to catch the gist of this drill.

Date: 9th July 2010
Duration: 4 hours

As per normal, we continued with the practicing of turun senja ta. Besides practicing in a contingent, we broke up into small squad to facilitate learning and true enough, improvement can be seen within individuals. However, for some reasons, the contingent still lacked coordination and in order to solve the problem, we formed back into the contingent and with numerous practices, we managed to execute the drill perfectly as a contingent.

Date: 16th July 2010
Duration: 4 hours

On 16th July 2010, the contingent began practicing marching. Though we had marched in numerous parades before, this was our first time marching with a flag, and indeed, many of us were not having an easy time when the flag covered our face while marching. As usual, the only solution to this problem is to keep on practicing.

Date: 23rd July 2010
Duration: 4 hours

On 23rd July 2010, the contingent continued with marching. Besides that, we had a mock parade to
ensure everyone knows where is their exact position and so that markings can be done. Basically, 23rd July 2010 was a day of intensive drill trainings. Adjustment of flags was also done on that day to prepare for the actual day. Instructors were present to supervise the flag training.

Date: 30th July 2010
Duration: 4.5 hours

It was similar for 30th July 2010, another day of intensive drills session. A mock parade was once again conducted. Duration of training was extended to 4.5 hours so as to prepare even better for the actual parade as that was our final training session. Much revision was also done on that day, starting from static drill, to rusok and senja and finally to marching. By the end of the day, Squad Arcainez has managed to reach the level of executing any parts of the flag drills.
