NYAA Service Entry - 18/12/08

Thursday, December 18, 2008

Date: 18/12/08
Duration: 6 hours
Participants: Wei Lun, Wei Xiang

Today, there was no teacher and we were just supposed to help the senior citizens if they have any problems with making calendars. Most of them were rather confused but some of them were able to learn quite fast and were even able to explore the PowerPoint program themselves. Overall, the senior citizens benefited from this revision as they were able to create their calendars and print them out. We even came to a situation where there was no more paper left. The senior citizens then proceed on with playing computer games and surfing the internet. At the end of the day, although we are tired, we are glad that the senior citizens were able to learn something new about the computer.

NYAA Service Update 6

Monday, December 15, 2008

The two sessions this Thursday will be from 10-12 and 1-5. 3 ppl are needed.

Currently, Wei Xiang and Kenny have the lowest no. of hours. So, they will go for this Thursday's session. There are currently 5 ppl with the 3rd lowest no. of hours. They are namely Jia Xuan, Wei Xuan, Fu Zhi, Syakir and me. One of them will go for the Thursday session.

It will be easier to manage if everyone have around the same no. of hours. This is not a game or a competition so no point seeing who has the highest no. of hours and then asking me to let you all for service sessions when you shld give others a chance. Our main purpose to go for this service sessions is to provide service and not to pass ppl homework, get some word installation file or whatever nonsensical reasons. =_= Thus, nonsensical excuses will not be accepted as reasons to let you go for service.

And, if you go for service sessions, attend it completely or you won't get hours. You won't get hours even if you have valid reasons and definitely not nonsensical reasons. Reasons such as someone guiding person A to person B's house and coming back for service is definitely the one of most absurd reasons to give that someone complete hours. I dun see a reason why is there a need to guide someone to somewhere relatively near compared to the distance between sedna and earth when there are inventions such as street directory, bus-guides, handphones and well-maintained transport systems that can ensure you to get to your desired destination with absolutely no problem at all. So, pls stop complaining abt your hours. I guess the reason is clear enough.

Thank you for your cooperation. This is the last section for NYAA. Get it over and done with and hope that we will get our Silver award by April.

If you feel pissed off by what I say, tell me. I will gladly give you my NCO post as NYAA coordinator.

NYAA PHYSICAL RECREATION

Sunday, December 14, 2008

Date: 5/12/08
Duration: 3h
Attendance: Everybody

Entry: Today we continued off from where we left off last week on sliding. Today we went to the next level of sliding which involved sliding a moving target. This was very good practice also as it trained our stamina to chase the guy down. Even though there were a few mistimed tackles but there were no injuries and we improved steadily. We then played a match and the score was 6-2.

NYAA Skills - GOH Entries

GOH Entries

Date: 16/6/08
Duration: 4 h
Participants: All

Today, we had our first training to prepare ourselves for speech day which will be held in august. As we are part of the GOH contingent, we need to start training much earlier so that our drills are up to standard. We practiced rifle drills required for the speech day parade such as ‘rusok senjata’, ’homat senjata’ and ‘turun senjata’. Although most of us were able to execute the drill, there was still room for improvement.

Date: 20/6/08
Duration: 4 h
Participants: All

Today, we practised rifle drills for the whole training as our drills were not yet up to standard. We improved significantly at the end of the day, in terms of coordination and swiftness in executing the drill.

Date: 27/6/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

Today, after revising on rifle drills, we practised marching. We told to take note of minor details such as not to drag our feet, land on our heels and coordinating our arm swings. Most of us were able to do marching drills properly at the end of the day.

Date: 4/7/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

Today, we practised on ‘turning on the march’ drills. We were told to turn on the spot and how each row should coordinate their footsteps. Most of us managed to do turning drills properly at the end of the training.

Date: 11/7/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

As speech day was nearing, we tried out the parade format and worked on errors we made, like stopping on the wrong spot and not following the drum beat. We also had to coordinate our arm swing during marching and turn at the correct time and place. Overall, we improved slightly but there can still be more improvements.

Date: 18/7/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

Today, our training was basically split into two parts. The rifle drills were done on the first part while we carried out the parade two or three times on the second part. This was to refresh our drills and prepare us for the upcoming speech day.

Date: 25/7/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

After trying out the full dress rehearsal with other uniform groups, we practised on rifle drills and marching. Most of us were prepared for speech day and our drills were up to standard.

Date: 2/8/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

After ensuring that our uniforms are in tip-top condition, we practised rifle drills as a warm up for the parade later on. The parade went on smoothly and the teacher officers were pleased with our performance.

NYAA Service - 10/12/08

*Everyone will get the hours they deserved cos not all games were used at the party. =_=*

Date:10/12/08
Duration:5 hours (2 hours for Fu Zhi)
Participants: All except Kenny

Today, we met up at Blk 6, Marine Terrace to prepare for the Christmas block party which would start at 6 p.m. The preparation included arranging chairs, decorating the place with balloons, streamers, Christmas pictures and setting up the booths required for the games later on.

Soon, the elderly residents arrived for registration. Some of them were active and they participated in the booth games while waiting for the event to start. The event started at around 6.45 p.m. and they played ice-breakers to know their neighbours better. After that, they a played a game which involved them to volunteer themselves and if they won they would get a prize.

After the games, we had a caroling session which an elderly resident volunteered to lead. We served them dinner after that and had our dinner as well. We also had a debriefing for the event today. Overall, I think that there is still room for improvement for almost everything in the event and we should strive to do better for the next event.

10 Dec Christmas Celebration

Sunday, December 7, 2008

- Most important part at the bottom. Don't say I didn't warn you. -

Right now, we don't have enough games. So everybody is needed to think of one. Think of either individual or group games. Briefly describe how the game is played and logistics needed.

Currently, these are the games I have thought of.

For individual games,

1) Memory

The participants will be given cards and they will be required to open the cards to see whether if two cards match. To complete the game, one must match all the cards.

Logistics needed: UNO Cards

2) Puzzle

Participants will be given bits of pictures related to Christmas and they will be required to join them up to form the picture.

Logistics needed: Ruler, Penknife/Scissors (Pictures will be printed at MPFSC)

3) Throwing Balls into a box

Participants will be required to throw balls into a box from a certain distance. Rules will be edited accordingly to suit the abilities of the participants.

Logistics needed: Small Plastic Balls, Box, Chair, Masking tape

For group games,

1) Blindfold Maze

Someone will be blindfolded and he will be inside the maze. The people outside the maze will guide the person out of maze through verbal communication. Inside the maze, there will be obstacles and the people outside the maze will guide the blindfold person to avoid the obstacles.

Logistics needed: Blindfold, twine, cups containing water, crushed paper

2) Live-Size Snake and Ladders

A maximum of 3 people will play this game. The rules will be the same as the original board game.

Logistics needed: Twine, dowel pole, manila hem, dice/calculator

Currently, the logistics not available are twine and plastic balls.

If you violently object to any of the above mentioned games, pls say so. Give suggestions to replace the game as well. You will also be required to think of two games as such.

And the most important part of this post. Don't read it, then blame for anything that goes wrong.

YOU WON'T GET SERVICE HOURS FOR THIS PARTY IF YOU DON'T THINK OF GAMES.

So think of games. Give me crap and you will seriously regret. Submit your suggestions via comments of this post.

Spread the message around.

NYAA Service - 4/12/08

Thursday, December 4, 2008

Date: 4/12/08
Duration: 6 hours
Participants: Brandon, Wee Liang, Kenny, Shaun, Ying Yao, Wei Lun

Today, we went to MPFSC to guide the senior citizens during the computer lesson. The first lesson was taught by Seow Hong, a staff of MPFSC. During the lesson, the senior citizens learnt how to change the wallpaper of the computer, create folders, type in Chinese, change the fonts, sizes and colours of words, save the file and surf the internet. Duuring the lesson, there are also breaks. These breaks are meant for the senior citizens to eat or to learn how to play computer games. One of the games they learnt was solitare. At the end of the lesson, they were given a test which most of them pass. They were also given a survey form to judge their own performance and our performance as their guides.

After lunch, we continued with the second lesson with another group of senior citizens. This time, it was conducted by another instructor, Yah Yee. The second lesson was about the same as the first lesson. They were also given time to explore the various uses of the computer. Overall, I believe that the lessons are successful as the senior citizens are more familiar with the usage of the computer.

[P.S: Done at MPFSC during break time. LOL.]
