NYAA Skills Entries 2 (Drills)

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Date: 6th August 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we started learning this new set of drills, which is rifle drills. For rifle drills, we use dummy 5.56mm M-16 rifles to learn, practice and master these drills.
First of all, we have to learn the basic rifle drills starting with ‘sedi-a’ and ‘senang di-ri’ with the rifle. It was simple, so we mastered within a short time.
Then, it was ‘rusok senja-ta’ from ‘sedi-a’. This particular drill was difficult to grasp, as we had to flick the rifle up from the ground and hold it with both hands at the same time. The main problem was that most of us could not grab with both hands at the same time, but instead ‘transferred’, which means grabbing the rifle with one hand at a time.
This drill took some time to learn and even more to practice, especially with that ‘transferring’ problem. At the end of this drill session, most of us finally managed to execute this drill properly.

Date: 13th August 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we revised the rifle drills we have learnt for the previous training and found out that a lot of us seemed to have lost the momentum of the drills. So, we took quite some time to practice them as ‘Practice makes Perfect’. We improved significantly in terms of coordination and swiftness in executing the drill, after this revision and drill practice.
Then, we learnt another new rifle drill, ’hormat senja-ta’, which is to salute. This particular drill had many steps and parts to it, so it takes time for all of us to remember at heart and learn this drill. We practised by parts first, so as to have a good grasp of the different steps. Finally, we managed to perform this drill fully, but there is definitely much more space for improvement.
We practised this drill for quite some time, before finally having mastered this complex drill.

Date: 20th August 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we revised the rifle drills we have learnt so far. Although most of us were able to execute the drill, there was still room for improvement. We practised and improved significantly in terms of coordination and precision in executing the drill.
We learnt another rifle drill, which is the ‘turun senja-ta’ from ‘hormat senja-ta’. It is to bring the rifle from salute down to the ground. This, just like the ‘hormat senja-ta’, is quite complex, as it has a lot of steps. We first learnt by parts and finally as a whole. Nobody can ever master a drill just by executing once, so we continued practising this drill.
Also, we learnt ‘turun senja-ta’ from ‘rusok senja-ta’. It is relatively simpler to learn and everyone was able to execute it in a matter of time. Finally, after practising all the rifle drills learnt so far, we were able to execute them very well.

Date: 27th August 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, after revising on rifle drills learnt so far, we practised marching with the rifle. We were to take note of minor details such as to avoid dragging our feet, to land on our heels and coordinating our arm swings.
Although we were able to march properly free-hand, without the rifle, but with the rifle, the marching experience was different. It took quite some time for us to adapt and we finally managed to march with the rifle well enough, though not a hundred percent perfect, at the end of the day.

Date: 3th September 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we revised the rifle drills that we have learnt, as usual, and practised marching with the rifle. After we were perfect, we learnt two new related rifle drills, ‘baring senja-ta’ and ‘angkat senja-ta’.
The drill ‘baring senja-ta’ is to place the rifle down to the ground from ‘sedi-a’ position. It takes some time to learn and practise till perfect, as we tend to slam the rifle down on the ground, though supposed to place it down gently and silently. There were also some difficulties in trying to place the rifle straight in position. We practised for some time and managed to execute this drill with coordination and accuracy.
Next is ‘angkat senja-ta’. It is to pick up the rifle from the ground after ‘baring senja-ta’. This was not as difficult as ‘baring senja-ta’, because there was only a problem of not being able to reach the rifle on the ground. We took a couple of minutes to learn, and we practised many times before being perfect in this drill.

Date: 10th September 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we practised the drills we have learnt, especially concentrating those newer ones, as the older ones are always used and had always being practised, such that we had no problems with them.
We were taught a new rifle drill this training, ‘julang senja-ta’. It is to bring the rifle from ‘rusok senja-ta’ to high port. We have to bring the rifle up in front of the chest and hold it with the magazine pointing forwards. This was simple to learn, but there were mistakes to be corrected, such as not pointing the magazine forward. Most of us mastered this drill at the end of this drills session.

Date: 17th September 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we went straight into learning two new rifle drills. First was ‘aleh senja-ta’, for changing the rifle from ‘rusok senja-ta’ position on the left to the right. It is also similar for the reverse action back to ‘rusok senja-ta’ position. After learning and practising, this easy-to-grasp drill was within our hands.
Second was ‘bimbit senja-ta’, for bringing the rifle down from ‘rusok senja-ta’ to hold the carrying handle. This drill was simple to catch, but the only problem was that some of us did not hold the rifle straight pointing forwards. This mistake took some time of practise to correct till we were perfect in this particular drill.
These two drills, though simple, took some time to practise, before we proceeded to revising all the other rifle drills until the end of training.

Date: 24th September 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Today, we firstly did all the other non-rifle drills that we have learnt. Then, we combined all the rifle drills we have learnt and practised it to mastery, and did with marching drills, such as marching at ‘julang senja-ta’ position.
This session was to practise and master all the drills we have learnt so far, so that our squad can execute drills proficiently with coordination, accuracy and swiftness by the end of training.

NYAA Skills Entries 1 (Drills)

Date: 4th June 2010
Duration: 4 hours

To prepare us for the school 134th speech day parade, Squad Arcainez was taught flag drills. Cadet Inspectors (CIs) and Honorary Officer (HO) were the in-charge of the trainings. On 23th june 2010, we learnt static drill, including Sedia (attention) and selang diri (at ease). Beside learning how to execute these dills precisely, we learn the correct way of handling our flags, such as the griping of flag poles before retiring for the day.

Date: 11th June 2010
Duration: 4 hours

On 1st July 2010, we continued with our flag drill trainings. As warming up activity, we started off with the static drills we learnt on 4th June 2010. However, some of us had forgotten the correct way of executing the drills and for the benefit of cadets who had missed training on 4th June 2010, the instructors decided to re-teach the drills.

Date: 18th June 2010
Duration: 4 hours

Similar to 11th June 2010, we started off with static drills. Thankfully, we managed to execute them pretty well. To further improve our drills, we spent 3 hours perfecting them and during the last 1 hour, the contingent was introduced to rusok senja ta (shoulder arms). We learnt the uses of it and managed to practise it for a while.

Date: 25th June 2010
Duration: 4 hours

On 25th June, we started off with rusok senja ta. However, some cadets had difficulties in executing it. Thankfully, instructors were there to guide the squad. It was not long before the entire contingent managed to do it properly. Though all can execute it, there were still rooms for improvement and coordination between squad mates are needed, therefore, we dedicated the rest of the day practicing and by the end of the day, most of them were able to execute the drills precisely.

Date: 2nd July 2010
Duration: 4 hours

On 2nd July, we were introduced to turun senja ta (order arms). Similar to rusok, we first learnt the theoretical aspect of it before moving on to the practical session. As turun senja ta has many parts and timing, the contingent was at a loss in the first place. It was only until the end of the day before the squad managed to catch the gist of this drill.

Date: 9th July 2010
Duration: 4 hours

As per normal, we continued with the practicing of turun senja ta. Besides practicing in a contingent, we broke up into small squad to facilitate learning and true enough, improvement can be seen within individuals. However, for some reasons, the contingent still lacked coordination and in order to solve the problem, we formed back into the contingent and with numerous practices, we managed to execute the drill perfectly as a contingent.

Date: 16th July 2010
Duration: 4 hours

On 16th July 2010, the contingent began practicing marching. Though we had marched in numerous parades before, this was our first time marching with a flag, and indeed, many of us were not having an easy time when the flag covered our face while marching. As usual, the only solution to this problem is to keep on practicing.

Date: 23rd July 2010
Duration: 4 hours

On 23rd July 2010, the contingent continued with marching. Besides that, we had a mock parade to
ensure everyone knows where is their exact position and so that markings can be done. Basically, 23rd July 2010 was a day of intensive drill trainings. Adjustment of flags was also done on that day to prepare for the actual day. Instructors were present to supervise the flag training.

Date: 30th July 2010
Duration: 4.5 hours

It was similar for 30th July 2010, another day of intensive drills session. A mock parade was once again conducted. Duration of training was extended to 4.5 hours so as to prepare even better for the actual parade as that was our final training session. Much revision was also done on that day, starting from static drill, to rusok and senja and finally to marching. By the end of the day, Squad Arcainez has managed to reach the level of executing any parts of the flag drills.

Service

Date: 2/9/08
Duration: 8 hours

Today, we went to MPFSC to guide the senior citizens during the computer lesson. The first lesson was taught by Seow Hong, a staff of MPFSC. During the lesson, the senior citizens learnt how to change the wallpaper of the computer, create folders, type in Chinese, change the fonts, sizes and colours of words, save the file and surf the internet. During the lesson, there are also breaks. These breaks are meant for the senior citizens to eat or to learn how to play computer games. One of the games they learnt was solitaire. At the end of the lesson, they were given a test which most of them pass. They were also given a survey form to judge their own performance and our performance as their guides.

After lunch, we continued with the second lesson with another group of senior citizens. This time, it was conducted by another instructor, Yah Yee. The second lesson was about the same as the first lesson. They were also given time to explore the various uses of the computer. Overall, I believe that the lessons are successful as the senior citizens are more familiar with the usage of the computer.

Date: 1/12/08
Duration: 2.5 hours

Today, we had a meeting at MPFSC regarding a Christmas block party to be held at Block 6 of Marine Terrace on 10 December. This party is meant to thank the residents living there for their support of MPFSC which has been running for 6 years. In this meeting, we discuss about our job allocation. Different people will be allocated to different jobs such as food I/C, decoration I/C, performance I/C and games I/C. Due to vast range of activities, most of us got double posting.

Overall, we managed to meet the objectives of this meeting as we managed to allocate the various jobs required among ourselves.

Date:10/12/08
Duration: 6 hours

Today, we met up at Blk 6, Marine Terrace to prepare for the Christmas block party which would start at 6 p.m. The preparation included arranging chairs, decorating the place with balloons, streamers, Christmas pictures and setting up the booths required for the games later on.

Soon, the elderly residents arrived for registration. Some of them were active and they participated in the booth games while waiting for the event to start. The event started at around 6.45 p.m. and they played ice-breakers to know their neighbours better. After that, they a played a game which involved them to volunteer themselves and if they won they would get a prize.

After the games, we had a caroling session which an elderly resident volunteered to lead. We served them dinner after that and had our dinner as well. We also had a debriefing for the event today. Overall, I think that there is still room for improvement for almost everything in the event and we should strive to do better for the next event.

Date: 18/12/08
Duration: 8 hours

Today, there was no teacher and we were just supposed to help the senior citizens if they have any problems with making calendars. Most of them were rather confused but some of them were able to learn quite fast and were even able to explore the PowerPoint program themselves. Overall, the senior citizens benefited from this revision as they were able to create their calendars and print them out. We even came to a situation where there was no more paper left. The senior citizens then proceed on with playing computer games and surfing the internet. At the end of the day, although we are tired, we are glad that the senior citizens were able to learn something new about the computer.

Date: 2/2/09
Duration: 2 hour

Today, we went for a meeting regarding the Chinese New Year celebrations on 7 Feb. We were briefed by Seow Hong on the things we are required to do. We will be mending 2 booths (Wii Bowling and Free Phototaking). After her briefing, we allocated the various jobs required among ourselves. Overall, the meeting was useful as everyone was clear on what they are supposed to do.

Date: 07/02/09
Duration: 8 hours

After arriving at the block, we got to work by setting up our respective game stalls ("Wii" bowling and Free Phototaking) before helping arrange the chairs for the audience. As soon as the residents reached the place, the games started. Some of us tended to the Photo booth while the others, the "Wii" bowling stall. After that was a performance by other organisations, followed by a "lou hei" session. Before we knew it, the event was over and we packed up the things to return them to MPFSC. Overall, seeing the smiles on the residents' faces really brightened our day, and we felt that all the planning and preparation was all worthwhile.

Adventurous Journey - Preliminary Training

Date: 17/10/08
Participants: All
Duration: 1 h

To prepare for our upcoming 'Survival Training Camp' (STC), we did a quick revision on the knots required such as the 'bowline' and the 'tent-guy loop'. We also practised pitching the STC tent and took note on the details of the tent such as the positioning of pegs, length of twine and amount of twine needed.

Date: 8/11/08
Participants: All
No. of hours: 1 hr

To prepare ourselves for the upcoming STC, we did a revision on the basic knots and lashes required. We then taught the Sec 2s these knots and lashes and gave them a test.

Date: 14/11/08
Participants: All
Duration: 3 hrs

To prepare for STC which will held next week, we did a revision on the steps needed to pitch the 4-man tent required for STC. We then tried out pitching the tent and taught the Sec 2s the way to pitch the STC tent. We taught them about the parts of the tent(ground sheet, inner sheet and outer sheet), the way to identify the 3 sheets, the knots required for the tent and pegging. They also tried out pitching the tent. After this training, the Sec 3s became more familiarised with the tent and the Sec 2s managed to learn a new skill for outdoor training.

Adventurous Journey - Qualifying Venture

Date: 17/11/2008 - 19/11/2008
Participants: All

Day 1

We arrived at Pulau Ubin and and gathered at the basketball court near the jetty for attendance taking. After that, we took a long walk to the campsite where we were divided into our groups from 1 to 5. We were introduced to our Group CIs (Cadet Inspectors) and they led us around the campsite, familiarizing ourselves with the surroundings that we will be living in for the next few days.

After lunch, which was instant noodles prepared by ourselves and can food, we played ice breaking games to allow us to be more familiar with our group mates. After knowing who our tent mates will be, we started tent-pitching. Using our campcraft skills, we managed to pitch up our tents.

After dinner, we were given an orienteering lesson by group CIs. From the lesson, we learnt the way to use the compass as well as map-reading skills. After that, we had a mock campfire. During this session, we were led by the song leaders to say various cheers and campfire songs that were going to be used for the actual campfire. We said cheers like ‘flea fly’, ‘gako the frog’ and ‘Titanic’.

After about one hour of cheering, we returned to out groups and were debriefed by our group CI, before going to sleep.

Day 2

In the morning at about 6am, we had our flag raising ceremony. Following that was morning PT. We did push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks and a few other types of exercises.
Then, we ate our breakfast.

Next the various groups went to carry out various activities. My group started with a crash course on outdoor training. This course involves three activities which are namely fire building, shelter building and water confidence course. From the fire building course, we learnt two things that are required for a fire besides oxygen. They are namely tinder, easily combustible material, and kindling, material needed to sustain a fire. Thus, a good campfire requires a good mix of tinder and kindling. For my group, we did not have shelter building as the station for this activity was not set up yet. Instead, we had a tour around the old part of the NPCC campsite which was unknown to most of us. The last activity to build up our water confidence was jetty jump. We were required to jump from a platform 3m above the sea. This was the most enjoyable activity to most of us.

After we had lunch, my group went for ‘treasure hunt’ which was actually a modified version of a land expedition. Our starting point was the basketball court where we gathered for attendance taking. From there, we were given clues to our next check point. The ending point was the campsite and we managed to complete it earlier than expected. We had a group discussion for our campfire item after that.

Next we had dinner. Following that was the campfire where we cheered throughout the night. After that, we had a mass debrief, a group debrief and a unit debrief. After washing up, we went back to our tents and sleep.

Day 3

In the morning, we had a fire drill. After that, we attended the flag raising ceremony, had our morning PT and ate our breakfast . Then, we unpitched our tents, cleaned the area and went for the debriefing session. During the debriefing session, they announced the prize winners for the best campers, best groups and best campfire performances and best CIs. Then, we walked back to jetty and took the boat back to Singapore.

Skills

Date: 16/6/08

Participants: All

Today, we had our first training to prepare ourselves for speech day which will be held in august. As we are part of the GOH contingent, we need to start training much earlier so that our drills are up to standard. We practiced rifle drills required for the speech day parade such as ‘rusok senjata’, ’homat senjata’ and ‘turun senjata’. Although most of us were able to execute the drill, there was still room for improvement.

Date: 20/6/08
Duration: 4 h
Participants: All

Today, we practised rifle drills for the whole training as our drills were not yet up to standard. We improved significantly at the end of the day, in terms of coordination and swiftness in executing the drill.

Date: 27/6/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

Today, after revising on rifle drills, we practised marching. We told to take note of minor details such as not to drag our feet, land on our heels and coordinating our arm swings. Most of us were able to do marching drills properly at the end of the day.

Date: 4/7/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

Today, we practised on ‘turning on the march’ drills. We were told to turn on the spot and how each row should coordinate their footsteps. Most of us managed to do turning drills properly at the end of the training.

Date: 11/7/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

As speech day was nearing, we tried out the parade format and worked on errors we made, like stopping on the wrong spot and not following the drum beat. We also had to coordinate our arm swing during marching and turn at the correct time and place. Overall, we improved slightly but there can still be more improvements.

Date: 18/7/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

Today, our training was basically split into two parts. The rifle drills were done on the first part while we carried out the parade two or three times on the second part. This was to refresh our drills and prepare us for the upcoming speech day.

Date: 25/7/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

After trying out the full dress rehearsal with other uniform groups, we practised on rifle drills and marching. Most of us were prepared for speech day and our drills were up to standard.

Date: 2/8/08
Duration: 6 h
Participants: All

After ensuring that our uniforms are in tip-top condition, we practised rifle drills as a warm up for the parade later on. The parade went on smoothly and the teacher officers were pleased with our performance.

Skills section4 5/9/08 2h

Diary entry: The sec2 and sec1 cadets started off their drill session with a surprise test by us to identify the better ones and to help the weaker ones get more help and assistance on their drills. This activity proved to help the sec2s and sec1s better in our bid to improve their drill standard.

Date: 12/9/08
Duration: 2h
Participants: All

As usual, we divided our squad into two groups. One group would take the Sec 1 and Sec 2s for drills while the other group will practise on rifle drills. The Sec 1s did foot drills while the Sec 2s did baton drills. Overall, every squad improved in their respective drills.

Date: 17/10/08
Participants: All
Duration: 3 hours

To prepare us for the 2nd class drill badge test next week, we did a quick revision on baton drills. We were told to take note of minor details when executing the drill such as holding the baton at 45 degrees in 'homat' position. We also practised on rifle drills and marching. In addition, we revised the full command of turning drills and the entire sizing drill.

Date: 23/10/08
Participants: All
Duration: 4 hours

We took our 2nd class drill badge test today. We started off with rifle drills, followed by the giving of commands and baton drills after that. It was a good revision, especially for the baton drills (which we had not done for a long time).

Date: 7/11/08
Participants: All except Sylvester
Duration: 2 hours

Some of us took the sec 1s for drills today. We revised the basics and trained them in more marching. They had some problems coordinating their arm swings initially but they improved gradually. Overall, they made some improvements.

The rest of us practised our rifle drills. We also practised some marching. This was to prepare ourselves for the upcoming first class drill badge.

Date: 20/11/08
Participants: All except Wei Xuan
Duration: 1 hour

On ROD, the Sec 4s held their final parade. There was some confusion as some of us forgot the format of the parade. The Sec 1s did not know the dressing drills as they lacked practice.

Date: 28/11/08
Duration: 1.5 hours
Participants: All

Today, we learnt the format of the muster parade which is to be conducted on a weekly basis. Firstly, CI Lucas explained the procedure of the muster parade. After briefly trying it out, we went to the parade square and did a mock muster parade. Overall, this is a good practice as conducting a muster parade is part of the 'first class drill badge test'.

Physical Recreation

Week 1:

Date: 22/8/2008

Today, we started off by playing a simple passing game called "1-touch". Everyone had to use only 1 touch to pass the ball to another person, this would continue on until someone fails to do so and the game restarts agin. The main objective of this is to train everybody's passing skills. Then we proceeded on to "monkey". In this game everyone would stand in a circle and there would be 1 "monkey" in the middle. The people on the outside have to try and pass the ball to one another continuously and the "monkey" would have to try and intercept the ball. When this happens, the last person would be the "monkey". Lastly, we had a soccer match and the final score was 2-0.

Date: 28/8/2008

We started off by playing a very simple game of passing among everybody to warm up. Then we proceedded on to our usual game of "monkey". Before the match. we then had another game of shooting at the goal. Then we had a match which resulted in a final score of 6-1.

Week 2:

Date: 5/9/2008

The match started first today and the score was 7-2. Our friends who left for IP also came back and joined us for this match. Then we proceeded on to shooting at the goal. Then we had another short match and the score was 2-2.

Week 3:

Date: 12/9/2008

Today we started off by having a match and the score was 7-1. Then to cool down, we practised passing among ourselves in a circle.

Week 4

Date: 17/10/2008

Having mastered our passing skills already, we then carried on with crossing. For a start, we practiced crossing the ball to our partner at a distance away from us. We did very well for first timers at this activities. Then we had a match after our exams and the score was 4-1.

Date: 23/10/2008

We started off by playing a match first, and when the scores was tied at 1-1, a heavy downpour occured causing us to stop our game half-way through.

Week 5

Date: 31/10/2008

Since there was less people today, we had to practice our crossing techniques today with less partners. Today, our main practice point was that we started to try and take corners, even though we were not so good, we kept practising then we proceeded on to a match and the score was 3-1.

Week 6

Date: 7/11/2008

With everyone present today, the practice for corner taking continued and we improved on our accuracy and tactics to ensure a higher chance to score goals. There was a significant improvement from the last time. The match ended with a score of 4-0.

Week 7

Date: 11/11/2008

Today, we started on a new section of soccer known as free kicks. Each person took turns to take free kicks at different areas of the field and for different purposes such as for crossing or shots. After practicing for a while, our accuracy improved and we could generate more power. Our match at the end had a score of 11-3.

Date: 14/11/2008

Today, we started off by taking penalty kicks. Then we played a full match with our sec2 juniors and we beat them by a score of 2-1. This was an evident improvement as we had never won them before.

Week 8

Date: 20/11/2008

Due to a shortage of time, we could only practice penalty kicks using different styles and each person was given an opportunity to be a goalkeeper and learn the various skills required.

Week 9

Date: 28/11/2008

Today, we started on a new skill of soccer known as intercepting. At first, everyone could not seem to be able to control their tackles, but slowly after practice, everyone got better and could intercept quite accurately by tackling. Then we played a match and it ended with a score of 1-1.
